Academy Spotlight: Gracie Barra York
When Gracie Barra Harrogate and Apperley Bridge decided on their expansion into York, Matthouse were on hand from start to finish. This project involved the complete creation of a brand-new Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy for Gracie Barra York, delivered from initial concept through to final handover. The brief was to design and build a high-performance training environment that reflects the global Gracie Barra identity while providing a welcoming, functional space for students of all levels.
Scope of Work
The project encompassed a full academy refit, including:
Concept development and spatial planning
Architectural design and layout optimisation
Construction and installation
Interior fit-out and bespoke joinery
Final handover and readiness for operation
Every stage was carefully managed to ensure the space met both the technical demands of a martial arts facility and the brand standards expected of a Gracie Barra academy.
Design & Layout
The architectural design focused on maximising usable mat space while maintaining clear zoning between training, retail, and reception areas. Flow, visibility, and safety were key considerations, ensuring that instructors can oversee sessions effectively and students can move freely through the space.
The layout balances:
A prominent, 150 square meter mat area as the core of the academy
A welcoming reception zone to enhance first impressions for members and visitors
Integrated retail display to support merchandise sales
A dedicated legacy wall to reinforce brand heritage and community identity
Training Area Installation
At the heart of the academy is a professionally designed semi-sprung mat system, engineered to provide optimal support and impact absorption.

High-performance Dollamur Flexi Connect mat surface for durability and safety
Seamless finish to meet competition and training standards
This setup ensures a safe and comfortable training environment, reducing injury risk while maintaining the performance feel required for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Bespoke Joinery & Interior Features
A key feature of the project was the creation of custom-built joinery elements tailored specifically to the academy’s needs. These included:
A fully bespoke reception desk designed for functionality and brand alignment
Custom retail display units to showcase Gracie Barra apparel and equipment
A striking legacy wall celebrating the history and values of the academy
All joinery was designed and delivered in collaboration with Flow Gracie Barra and River Interiors, ensuring consistency with brand guidelines while achieving a high-end, durable finish.
